Comedians have supported Chris Rock after he received backlash for his jokes about Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith during his recent stand-up show, Selective Outrage.
Comedians Support Chris Rock Following His Will Smith And Jada Pinkett Smith Comments-‘YOU STAYED TRUE TO YOURSELF’
Following Smith’s slapping, he was banned from the Academy Awards. Rock used his show, ‘Selective Outrage,’ to mock both him and his partner.
Rock made a quip about Jada Pinkett Smith’s unfaithfulness and alluded to the event where Smith hit him onstage. Additionally, while ridiculing him, Rock likened Smith to Suge Knight, who is currently serving a sentence for homicide.
In his statements during that period, Rock stated: “You all know what happened to me, getting smacked by Suge Smith. It still hurts. I got ‘Summertime’ ringing in my ears.”
But rather than being criticized, Rock received support. This is understandable for the following reasons. First of all, it has been a year since the incident occurred.
And given that Rock did not respond in kind to Smith during the incident, he is entitled to have his say now. Secondly, reports stress that Smith has not personally apologized to Rock. Therefore, that would only go on to fuel Rock’s grievances.
Comedian D.L. Hughley had this to say: “I’m going to give my brother, his flowers and his respect,”@chrisrock YOU DID THE DAMN THING, MOST IMPORTANTLY… YOU STAYED TRUE TO YOURSELF.”
The response on social media was much the same. This was on the basis that Rock had the right to air his grievances by virtue of free speech, which is at the heart of comedy.
One person wrote: “This is really very simple, if people are offended by comedy, the can refrain from *choosing* to go to or watch comedy shows.”
Rock clearly has managed to use that experience for his own ends, and that is not going to end anytime soon. So there you have it folks. What did you think about this? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
